Cogeco Internet – Bandwidth Caps

Here is a quick post detailing the bandwidth caps on Cogeco internet services. This listing shows Cogeco bandwidth caps for residential internet services. From our understanding Cogeco calculates usage in GBs where 1GB = 1024MBs. Bandwidth calculations are based on a monthly basis. So each bandwidth cap below applies to a given month (Example: Jan 1st to Jan 31st). After the month the bandwidth cap resets to zero and from there your caps start again.

This list should help you base the bandwidth caps provided by Cogeco with the Internet service that fits your usage. For example if you only use the Internet for browsing email and searching web pages you would be better off with the Cogeco Lite internet as your usage will not require a lot of bandwidth. If you download or stream video often you would be better off with the Cogeco Standard Internet, etc…

You will receive an email notification to all of your Cogeco email addresses when you reach 85% and 100% of your Cogeco bandwidth cap, so remember to check your Cogeco email account frequently.

Also, the Cogeco bandwidth monitor does not show your Cogeco bandwidth in realtime. You should be able to see your current days usage by the next day.

Speedtest Cogeco – Its Not Working!

Having a hard time running a Cogeco speedtest? Speedtest Cogeco is just not working for you?

Sometimes when trying to run a Cogeco speedtest at speedtest.cogeco.net you will receive the following error upon accessing speedtest Cogeco.

Speedtest Cogeco Net

Now the error , “Your browser does not support Java, so nothing is displayed.” can be a little misleading. It makes it sound like you need to jump on that internet surf board and start looking for a new internet browser. But, not so fast quick draw! It’s not that your browser doesn’t support Java, well it might be if you are running a stone aged browser, but its simply happening, because you don’t have Java installed on your computer. What the heck is Java you ask? Java is simply a program that you install on your computer to allow certain internet based programs to run. These programs are designed specifically to use Java and without it they will not run, which is exactly what we are seeing here.

The Fix
1. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
2. Download the version of Java that supports your OS (Win XP, Windows 7, etc…)
3. Install Java after the Download
4. Reload speedtest.cogeco.net and you should now see this and be on your way.

Interested in running a speedtest on your Cogeco internet connection? Want to know if you are getting the correct Cogeco internet speeds? If so, then follow this tutorial and learn how to run a Cogeco speed test.

The following are the Cogeco internet speeds you should be getting depending on the internet package you are subscribed to. Now keep in mind that if you are getting approx. 80% of the listed speeds your connection is working properly. Your upload and Download will never be exactly on the button. Hence why it says “Up to” below.

Cogeco Speeds
Cogeco Lite Internet – Upload: up to 600kb / Download: up to 3Mbps
Cogeco Lite plus – Upload: up to 7Mbps / Download: up to 800kbps
Cogeco Standard – Upload: up to 1Mbps / Download: up to 14Mbp
Cogeco Pro – Upload: up to 1Mbps / Download: up to 125Mbps
Cogeco Ultimate – Upload: up to 1.5Mbps / Download: up to 50Mbps

Steps to Speedtest Cogeco Internet

1. Go to speedtest.cogeco.net

Speedtest Cogeco Net

2. Click the start button
3. You will see the speedtest run, something like this
Speedtest Cogeco Net

4. You will then be presented with the results.
Speedtest Cogeco Net

In the results the value in Green is the Download in kbps, while the Red is the Upload in kbps. As we can see from the results my download is 14,770 kbps, which is approx. 14Mbps and my upload is 1057kbps, which is approx. 1 Mbps. Considering that I am on the Cogeco Standard internet package which provides an upload up to 1Mbps and a download up to 14Mbp my connection is looking very good and right on target, as I have a 14Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. If you look at the exact numbers I am actually getting better speeds than Cogeco states they provide for the Standard Internet, Oh yeah!

When looking at the results page in kbps just look at every 1000kbps to equal 1Mbps. This is not the exact math for the calculation, but this will be able to give you a general idea of where your Cogeco speeds are at. For example: 16,000Mbps = 16Mbps, 10,000kbps = 10Mbps, 5,000kbps = 5Mbps, 800kbps = 0Mbps.

Descriptions:
Cogeco Speed – Cogeco Speed Shows the upload and download speed associated with the particular internet package.

Cogeco Bandwidth Limit (Cap) – Shows the maximum amount of internet bandwith you are allowed per month. Going over this amount will result in you paying a over usage charge for each GB of bandwidth that you have gone over the bandwidth cap.

Over usage – The charge per GB you must pay if you go over your bandwidth cap. Example: Say you are subscribed to the Cogeco Ultimate internet tier and you used 170 GB of upload and download bandwith last month. Well, as we can see in the below chart the Ultimate package has a monthly bandwidth cap of 150GB. But, we are over 20GB. 170GB (Used) – 150 GB (Allowed) = 20GB. Looking at the below chart again we see the over usage charge for the Cogeco Ultimate internet tier is $1.00 per GB over. 20GB (over) x $1.00 = $20.

How To Configure a Computer For Cogeco Internet

Are you a new Cogeco Internet customer wondering what you need to do to get online? Well before we start looking into things it should be known that when Cogeco cable installs an internet customer the technician will usually make sure everything is up and running before they leave. That means you should be able to turn on your computer, open your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc…) and be surfing the net. The only thing they don’t install is a router.

If for some reason you are not up and running after the technician leaves here are the things you need to have.

1. A network card installed in your computer (Also known as Ethernet Card or NIC card).
2. A Cogeco modem or EMTA (Voip/Inet Modem)
3. A Ethernet Cable (Looks like an oversized phone cord)
4. A Router (OPTIONAL)

Note: Cogeco cable does not support the hookup of a router or wireless router. However, you can use one on their service, they just don’t provide support for routers. Since they don’t make routers why would they support someone else’s product, right? But have no fear, because in the near future we will show you how to connect with a router.

Here is how everything should be connected:

The Connections
No Router
A Ethernet cable should go from the Ethernet port on your Cogeco modem to the Ethernet port on your network card. You should now be online

With Router
Ethernet cable should go from your Cogeco modem to the wAn/Internet port on your router. Then you need another ethernet cable from port 1 onyour router to the Ethernet port on your network card.

With Wireless Router
Ethernet cable should go from your Cogeco modem to the wAn/Internet port on your router. Then you need to connect your wireless network card to your wireless router. You may need to contact the wireless router manf. To change some settings if it is not working, but other than that you should be online.

Troubleshooting

This is a list of some things that might be happening if you are not online.
1. Network Card Drivers are not installed on your computer
2. Wireless card is not connecting to your wireless router. Check the settings or contact the router manf.
3. Your service could be offline on Cogeco’s end. How many lights are on your modem? If not many your service could be down.
4. Your network card may be configured incorrectly.
5. Network card is faulty
6. Router is faulty
7. Multiple other reasons

Stay tuned on our blog for future tips and tricks on troubleshooting your Cogeco Internet connection. If you determine a network card, router or other peripheral is the cause for your service being down you can quickly find a part replacement at Our Store.
